Signed V Birchenall Designation Vannessa Birchenall Date September 2017 Policy Issue No. 6 Dated Sept 2017 The next date for review of this policy is Sept 2018 Introduction
1.1 Regular attendance is essential if children are to achieve their full potential 1.2 Respect4us values all students. We will work with home schools and families to identify the reasons for poor attendance and try to resolve any difficulties 1.3 Respect4us recognises that our attendance policy should not be viewed in isolation and is supported by our policies on safeguarding, bullying and behaviour. The policy also takes into account the Human Rights Act 1998, the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 and the Race Relations Act 2000.
framework 2.1 Section 7 of the 1996 Education Act states that parents must ensure that children of compulsory school age receive sufficient full time education suitable to their age, ability and aptitude to any special educational need they may have, either by regular attendance at school or otherwise. 2.2 A child is of compulsory school age at the beginning of the term following their fifth birthday. A child ceases to be of compulsory school age on the last day of June of the school year in which they are sixteen. 2.3 Under the Education Act 1996, the local authority has a statutory responsibility to ensure that parents secure education for their children of compulsory school age and where necessary, use legal enforcement. 2.4 The Education (student registration) (England) Regulations 2006, require schools to take an attendance register twice a day, once at the start of the morning session and once at the start of the afternoon session. For Respect this is only once as students have breakfast and remain with the instructors for the rest of the day. 2.5 The register must record whether the student was: · Present · Absent · Unable to attend due to other circumstances
absence 3.1 Where students of compulsory school age are recorded absent, the register must show whether the absence is authorised or unauthorised 3.2 All absence will be treated as unauthorised unless a satisfactory explanation of the absence has been received 3.3 The home school of the student will make Respect4us aware of any authorised absence 3.4 Respect for us will inform the home school of any unauthorised absence 3.5 Religious observation: respect4us acknowledges the multi-faith nature of British society and recognises that on some occasions religious festivals may fall outside school holiday periods or weekends and this necessitates a consideration of authorised absence or special leave for religious observation 3.6 It is reasonable for a parent to allow their children not to attend Respect4us on any day of religious observation if recognised by the parent’s religious body 3.7 Unauthorised absence: Absence will not be authorised unless the home school has given permission for this to be the case
